I know already contemporary art is not an accurate description. I would have done better calling it "brutalist art". Brutalist criticism is associated with conservative thinkers like roger scruton who inject a second branch of the ideology in their quest for political dominance.
So since I want to avoid it and I have something else to express, I call it just "contemporary". Allow me to use the term "contemporary" liberally. I come to the point.
Contemporary art goal is to appear "profound" they focus on a very small subset of human perceptions, they like to entertain the ego of the viewers. The contract with the viewers is this one: You pretend this art piece is deep and meaningful, your reward for your conformity is that I consider you "someone who gets it = intellectual".
The deal is: you say its profound (read the description its operational utilitarian), you get positive social status in return. Simple as.
Contemporary art = social work. They are "tools". They tell the viewer exactly how they are supposed to interpret the work. The art functions socially and is "deep" and "important" or "intellectual" or signals your status by showing that "you get it". Even if a kid may struggle because meaning isnt obvious to him, the adult will just understand the order of operations and perform the social identity. I call it also "robotoid art".
These are dumbed down instructions when you look at the art pieces. Theyre not objects, they are fetishes or totems.
If you disrespect the so called "deep meaning", people get defensive, because that belief is all they have in life. So you would be taking away from them the only proof of them being "cultured" or "smart", they protect it instinctively. Its like they are savages with their idol worship, and if you touch the idol they cut your throat.
Usually, in society the class that interacts with art is the bourgeoisie one. No idea how it works in your society but in mine its the progressive administrators and party members who get into a dialogue with art. So art reflects their internal states and is a social glue for them. Its not for me, because im an outcast and im not inclined to comply at all.
This is how I see this art, feel free to call it "brutalist" I totally understand also that perspective. I have another idea, which is waht I wrote here.
Contemporary art in my opinion
