"A child that is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth" - African Proverb

Despite criticism (people say it's a stupid meaningless quote), this quote does indeed contain meaning. I'm not delve into the criticism because honestly it wasn't good enough for me to even remember. It avoided the actual meaning of the quote and focused on irrelevant facts, thermodynamics and play on words (warmth, fire, heat from an embrace). There are no arguments that disprove the truth that the meaning of the quote represents.

Deconstructing The Quote
To my perception the quote is saying "A person that has not been nurtured and fulfilled by a society will feel a negative emotion or emotions towards that society and take various levels of action to inflict damage or otherwise evoke a negative emotion from the society." An example is Elliot Rodgers, may he rest in piece, actually I hope he is not resting and that he is proud and looking at the progression of the movement. Elliot Rodgers was unfulfilled, he did not "feel the village's embrace, so he burned it down", he evoked a negative emotion from society (maybe to reflect his pain and unfulfillment?). Critics will say that Elliot Rodgers should not have done that and people who feel unfulfilled should not do such things. This statement while true, however, is naive and un thought out (devoid of effort). Let me explain why. If people like Elliot Rodgers shouldn't do that, then why is it that they did? It points out a deeper issue; an issue with household, education, workforce, sexual/relationship market, and society. All these structures/environments should have been developed or constructed in a way that people like Elliot Rodgers would receive embrace, would receive fulfillment. I believe that Elliot Rodgers would not have acted out if those structures were in place and he would still be with us today. Unfortunately, it can take tragedies for people to finally pay attention.

Conclusion
The african proverb does indeed have a purposeful meaning and points out an issue. The purpose of pointing out the issue is so that we can address it. We can follow the wise instruction of the quote to improve the structures in our society. This quote is most definitely related to men's well being.
