I think is basically a romance structure.

Someone idealizes someone else. The end is delusion.

Kakihara is masochistic and idealizes ichi. Then kakihara fights ichi who can give him ultimate pain, but he discovers ichi is a manipulated guy who fights under influences of dissociation. Jiji is the handler who uses ichi to kill others. Jiji uses a mix of trauma conditioning, hypnotic suggestion and identity rewriting.

Jiji basically uses sort of an MK ultra psyop, tells ichi "you are weak" "you didnt protect that girl" "you are bullied". And then he installs the hero fantasy, so ichi goes around wearing a costume with 1 written on it. He will go around killing people believing they are bullies who need to die.

Ichi sexuality is also twisted, he jacks off to dead bodies, he has sex with whores at times and cannot interact with them normally, he also killed a whore trying to save her from an abusive pimp. And after every killing spree, jiji tells ichi that he did the right thing and he saved people and won against evil. Jiji keeps giving drugs to ichi, also hes the only person he can trust.

Basically ichi the killer is a manipulated psyopped weirdo. Hes not the dream kakihara had, and so this tale reads like a love story.

In the final battle kakihara vs ichi, I wondered if kakihara had a chance. It shows that kakihara goes out of the trance and then he loses. I wondered if his trance would have allowed him to win. How I interpreted it, theres jiji who realizes that so long kakihara is in trance he has a chance at victory, so he wakes him up. This is my speculation, jiji wakes up kakihara because jiji is an expert psyopper so he can wake up someone from trance-like states. And also ichi is woken up in the fight.

Another thing I didnt understand is how could ichi keep fighting when he clearly woke up from the trance. I am thinking maybe in that moment of clarity ichi integrates both personalities. So in my view ichi became a person who simply cannot stop the violence, even if he woke up from the trance.

Another thing that made me curious is where hideo yamamoto got all the info about how mind control works. The manga was done in 1990, and they treat false memory implants and trauma based mind control and dissociation. My guess is this guy yamamoto was into conspiracy theories about CIA. Its just a guess, because another explanation is that he was observing reality around him, simply the reality of the pimps and the criminals that japan is probably full of.

Sometimes lots of stories in manga are just reality. The darker they are, the more likely they are real and the manga artist took them from things he seen.

Its also true maybe all ofthis is a coincidence, becase thres many other mangas from the 90s that explore same ideas about mind control and abuse. Maybe it was a thing of the 90s who knows.
