Im in italy. I can tell you that nobody considers these people "serious". And often they try to act tough, and they pretend there are ghettos so they can leverage the artificial social status of "grown in the streets of violence", but its not real. In italy theres only 1 or 2 cities that are big enough to have the equivalence of a "thug ghetto" and italy is a smaller place compared to america.

these places are: bologna, prato, roma, napoli. Maybe theres other places.

The point is theres no ghetto, and the closest equivalence would be the "popular houses" and they are neighborhoods full of tv watchers, they are given for free to low income people. These areas often develop the romantic narrative of "born into violence", and at times they try to steal cultural symbols from ndrangheta.
