I have always considered it to be an autobiographical work that also has seamlessly integrated ideological and philosophical points of instruction, much like Trotsky's "My Life" which offers a compelling narration of his formative experiences but also provides a rigorous elucidation of his thought process and what led him to his Bolshevik convictions. In other words, it is the best of both worlds as it entertains and edifies the reader.
